There is an event that happens in the dreaded midpoint in the year that students wish for and teachers fear. Seniors at my school do not care because they are graduating . The underclassmen aren’t aware enough to realize that having the day off creates a longer school year. What am I talking about? SNOW DAYS! They sound great in theory, but teachers know that for every day we miss they are tacking on an additional day at the end of the year.
Unfortunately, as a teacher , it is a very mixed feeling that I have. I want a snow day, but I don’t. I would much rather be out of school when it is nice outside so that I can do more fun things. Fun is limited during the winter. Maybe I just think about things too much. All I know is that I want to be able to dress the way I want, eat when I want to, and, most importantly, use the restroom when I need to. People that have jobs outside of education don’t think about these menial , everyday things. If you are a teacher, you know exactly what I mean.
This is just a topic that I think about from November to March. Illinois weather is sketchy. It can be 50 degrees in the morning, 70 in the afternoon, and 30 at night. You just never know what you will get. I am sure teachers in other states feel the same. With all of this being said, there is no other job that I would want to do.
There are those who say that teaching is easy. After all, we get three months off in the summer and holidays all year long. People who say this obviously have never been in a room with 20 plus teenagers who have various issues, attitudes, and personalities. If you ask me, I think everyone should have to spend a day as a teacher. Perhaps then they would understand why teachers need those summer months free.
Whether you love snow days or hate them, one thing is for certain. Teaching is a crazy business. And while it can drive a person absolutely bonkers, there is no where else that I would want to be. Well….maybe in the Rockies, but other than that, I am right where I need to be.
Until next time,
Cat
